Congratulations to Sergio, Turner Elementarys' awesome kitchen manager for winning the October District Champion Award. Sergio was nominated by Marsha Chapin, who was informed about his kindness from our staff. A student reported that Sergio gives him high fives every morning and is a positive influence, which makes coming to school exciting! Way to go Sergio! You make the difference!!!!!
The staff at Turner Elementary have varied interests and hobbies they enjoy when not working with students. Para, Sharon Matthews, likes to spend her time outdoors camping and fishing. On a recent Saturday in October, Mrs. Matthews caught her biggest fish ever at Leavenworth State Fishing Lake. She is pictured here with her 7 lb., 19 in. large mouth bass! Quite a catch!
Not only does Mrs. Ochoa or "Miss Lalie", as she is known by her students, teach all day at Turner Elementary but she also spends time at the new Lakeshore Learning Store in Merriam! Mrs. Ochoa will be doing a free children’s craft every Saturday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. She says, "I am excited to be a part of a great store that helps teachers and families find the perfect tools for teaching and learning." Along with the children's crafts, she will also be doing teacher workshops.
The Turner USD 202 Champion Award is given to nominees who inspire students to reach their full potential, place the needs of others first, provide inspiration and support among other qualities. The winners of the September award are Mrs. Kiley Tenbrink , 5th grade, and Mrs. Brittany Gonser, 4th grade ! The two teachers were nominated by Ms. Gilliand who teaches PE at Turner Elementary. During the hot temperatures we have had, Mrs. Tenbrink and Mrs. Gonser provided cold drinks for the PE teachers on their plan time (and from their own money!) Ms. Gilliand states, "These teachers inspire me, as well as the students, to be better people by being such great role models!" Congratulations to Mrs. Gonser and Mrs. Tenbrink!
Congratulations to Sara Nickel, SPED teacher, for being nominated for Kansas Teacher of the Year! The Kansas Teacher of the Year Award recognizes, and utilizes representatives of excellent teaching in the elementary and secondary classrooms of the state. Its mission is to build and utilize a network of exemplary teachers who are leaders in the improvement of schools, student performance, and the teaching profession. Sara Nickel has taught at Turner Elementary for seven years. Since working in the Turner school district she has taught special education for many grade levels including kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades. Mrs. Nickel is an active member of the BIST, Student Intervention, and her grade levels’ Turner Learning Teams. When nominated for Kansas Teacher of the Year she said, “I feel incredibly honored and humbled. Thank you to all of the students, families, and colleagues for making me feel special. You are my inspiration and why I am in this profession!” Sara was honored at the Teacher of the Year Banquet on Sunday, September 8th, in Overland Park, Kansas. Congratulations to Shannon Schmitt, recipient of the Turner USD 202 Champion Award for the month. "Miss Shannon," as she is known to the students, is one of the first faces you see when entering Turner Elementary! She began in the Turner School District as a para and has been a secretary at Turner Elementary for 9 years. Shannon became the head secretary at TE in 2012. She was nominated for the award because of many of her "shining-star" qualities! She takes initiative and goes over and beyond her assigned duties. Shannon is involved in the Reading Counts program and makes sure the students have Reading Counts shirt and decals. She is a great source of information to students, staff and to parents and is a true champion at Turner Elementary! On Thursday, August 1st, new teachers to Turner School District were welcomed at Turner High School. Turner Elementary new teachers that attended are: Mrs. Black & Mrs. White (1st grade), Mrs. Grear & Mrs. Hoppe (SPED), Mrs. Call (3rd grade) and Mrs. Wortman (5th grade).
